A seemingly harmless word used in very odd ways.
The term is used most frequently in the extinction of a child.
ODD
Definitions 1 & 2 define it as capable of living or growing or developing – which we know an unborn child is very capable of as long as it’s not removed from it’s mother.
BUT
removed from it’s mother, it is not capable of living, surviving on it’s own.
If this is the case, then why would we apply it to the word: CHOICE?
Because the child cannot communicate in traditional ways, does it not have a CHOICE?
This road that we have come down in the last 50-70 years is a very strange one. We, as a nation, have set policy on life. We don’t realize it, but as long as these are the definitions for “viable”, then we do not have far until we apply these things to other human life forms. Elderly? Injured? Intellectual Disability? At what point does inconvenience trump life?
We send Dr. Kevorkian to prison because he endorses, teaches, acts upon euthanasia, but how many people think he was unjustly prosecuted? He was acting on the request of the people he was treating.
BUT
he took the Hippocratic Oath and within the construct, it says:
Every doctor must take this oath. So when does this oath become invalid in the career of a doctor? The moment they choose to end life in a mother, they have violated their oath to protect, to guard, to cherish life in PURITY & HOLINESS.
If we keep choosing to allow abortion in today’s understanding of science, then we, as a nation, all have blood on our hands. If you choose not to agree, that is fine, but please research your decision thoroughly in light of facts and not politics. Today i pray for the unborn, for the viable, for the mothers who have been lied to, for the doctors and nurses who have set aside their oath in light of the lie. Today i pray that the bloodshed would stop, the murder would cease, the unborn would live, the broken would turn to life. Today i pray for each young person who is facing the most life-changing decision they will ever make. i pray they would reach out for help. i pray that God would put just the right person in their life.
Today i pray for the mothers who have made the choice and live with it every day for the rest of their life. Today i pray they would accept the forgiveness of the Father. i pray they would turn their heartache, their pain, their tragedy to wisdom and teaching and loving and helping others. i pray for peace and love to surround them. i pray that they would know the love of God, the peace of God, the forgiveness that surpasses human understanding.
Today i pray for every baby that is taken in the name of convenience. i pray that evil would be banished from the midst of the clinics. i pray that health classes in schools would teach truth about life. i pray that people would stand up for right instead of hiding in fear of offense. Very well written (you had wondered about it in your comment on my blog). I began reading the definition of viable – wow. Sometimes, we move away from the true definition of a word. I guess that’s an old bag of tricks. “Didn’t God say??” from the serpent in the Garden of Eden. We begin to hear the commonplace definition that’s been applied to it and forget what it really means.

Yes, that definition is quite telling in the way we use the word from what it really means. It is a scary thought that there might come a time when each & every one of us becomes not-viable – when will society as a whole cross the line? Every small victory for “choice” in that debate is a nail in our own coffin.
