The Galatians One

TheFruitOne“Love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, gentleness, faithfulness, self-control. Against these things, there is no law.”
This ornament was received during a present exchange game one year. The game got a little spicy and folks were having a little fun with it. Things were said in the heat of this silly game – about the gifts that were given. This ornament was one of the “unwanted” ones and had been traded around and bantered about. My gift had been “stolen” and replaced with this one. Needless to say, in the passion and comradery, I was not gentle or kind in my joking. My friend gently leaned over to me and quietly said, “I made that ornament.” Immediately I was humble, thinking of every joke that had been said and every silly thing bantered about the room – especially the ones that I said.
My friend, Kelly, and her husband had moved here from out of state a year prior to partner in a business venture. Once here, thru a series of very hard circumstances, the partner took the business and they lost about everything. She daily, faithfully, waited on God’s provision as they walked a precarious tightrope, making sure their 3 small children had food and shelter every day and not knowing always where it would be coming from. I had learned snippets of God’s faithfulness, patience, goodness from watching her each day. I was crushed at my words – at the unintentional slap of my friends handiwork. She wanted to participate in this gift exchange game and couldn’t afford frivolous things, so she made a glass ornament with the fruit of the Spirit painted on it. It’s a beautiful reminder each year of the lessons learned then, God’s patience with me, & a sweet friend that God brought into our lives for a moment that gracefully taught lessons for a lifetime.

I love this ornament and think of her family every year as I set it always high on the tree – where God’s Word should be in our lives.

Ornament Stories

I do love getting out the ornaments each year. Every ornament on my tree holds a memory or has a story. Many are handmade. As I open them up and set them around the tree, I remember each person who has made an impact in our lives. I am thankful that God brought each one into our lives.

this week has been a week of JOY and answers for our house {employment!} and many of my friends who we have been praying for. we are so joyful for all the answers. so many times in the last few days, my heart is so overwhelmed with joy that it feels like it is going to burst from my chest & i cannot move. since the realization that we were going to be ok and just that it was time to wait on God’s timing, we became enamored with the waiting and have been blessed more than abundantly in the process.

2 Corinthians 9: 6-15

Remember this – a farmer who plants only a few seeds will get a small crop. But the one who plants generously will get a generous crop. You must each decide in your heart how much to give. And don’t give reluctantly or in response to pressure, for God loves a person who gives cheerfully {Proverbs 22:9} And God will generously provide all you need. Then you will always have everything you need and plenty left over to share with others. As the Scriptures say,

“They share feely and give generously to the poor.
Their good deeds will be remembered forever.” {Psalm 112:9}

For God is the One who provides seed for the farmer and then bread to eat. In the same way, He will provide and increase your resources and then produce a great harvest of generosity in you.

Yes, you will be enriched in every way so that you can always be generous. And when we take your gifts to those who need them, they will thank God. So two good things will result from this ministry of giving – the needs of the believers in Jerusalem will be met, and they will joyfully express their thanks to God.

As a result of your ministry, they will give glory to God. For your generosity to them and to all the believers will prove that you are obedient to the Good News of Christ. And they will pray for you will deep affection because of the overflowing grace God has given to you. Thank God for this gift too wonderful for words!

what an amazing passage of teaching! as we are a blessing to others, He blesses us so abundantly that we cannot help but pour out in generosity and the circle continues. we have been blessed by so many this week and our hearts are filled to overflowing from seeing God’s church at work in our little sphere of life. He teaches us to depend on one another and be interwoven as His family, the church.

today i pray that God puts people in our path that are in need of the blessing He has bestowed on us! i pray that we would be able to give generously to those who need blessing, that what we cannot give in things, we will be able to give in words and encouragement. i pray that God’s glory shines thru and that those who do not know the One will find Him thru the blessings of His children. i pray that God’s children would be driven to their knees in joy, that they would be so overwhelmed with His love today that they cannot contain it and it would spread like fire thru our city, our county, and beyond. today i give praise and thanks and glory to the One who provides, the One who watches over us, the One who encourages us, the One who loves…

today i also pray for the ones who have not received answers, who are still in the middle, who still wait. i pray that they would find the joy in the waiting, the hope to continue, and would be able to wait expectantly for their answers knowing that the One is building their character and growing their relationship with Him.

today i pray for those who received their answers, but they are not answers of joy. i pray for the hard answers, the crushing news, the heartbroken and the weary. i pray that in the midst of their brokenness and their pain, that they would find peace in the struggle, they would feel loved in the process, they would be surrounded with God’s people and His words. i pray that their minds get rest and their relationships knit together tighter as they lean in to the One. be with the hurting and the broken today, Lord.

Psalm 33:1
“Let the godly sing for joy to the Lord; it is fitting for the pure to praise Him.”

TODAY I choose to trust God. Not just to trust Him, but to trust IN Him. To rely on his promise and to stand on the past. He is a gracious, loving, generous God who has walked us through many storms faithfully. Not because we have been faithful, but because He is faithful. He has walked us through more storms that we have created through our own poor choices as well as many that have been brought to us to make us stronger.

Psalm 33:4
“For the word of the Lord holds true and we can trust everything He does.”
I WILL rely on His promise
I WILL stand on His truth
I WILL rest in the peaceful moments
I WILL trust in the chaotic moments

It is a choice to stand in faith and remember that He is God and i am not. He is the One who looks down from heaven and sees the beginning from the end. He knows our fate before we arrive. I do not know the outcome of this day, but I trust that He does and I will choose to trust in the promise that He loves us and wants our best. He wants to bring our best out of us and sometimes that is painful.
Psalm 33:5  “He loves whatever is just and good; the unfailing love of the Lord fills the earth.”

Psalm 33:18-21
“But the Lord watches over those who fear Him, those who rely on His unfailing love.”
“He rescues them from death and keeps them alive in times of famine.”
“We put our hope in the Lord. He is our help and our shield.”
“In Him our hearts rejoice, for we trust in His holy name.”

Today i prayed that we would choose to trust God, to trust in His love, in His promise, His future for us. I pray that we will remind ourselves of His work in the past, that we would remember where He has brought us from, that we would remember each situation that caused us fear in the past and how He was there with us always. I pray that worry would be far from our minds and far from our hearts as we take these steps into the unknown future and know that even tho we can not see what’s coming, He can. i pray that we would be patient, learning to wait on His time and not force things out of fear. i pray that we remember to rejoice in Him and trust in His holy name.

Psalm 33:22
“Let your unfailing love surround us, Lord, for our hope is in You alone.”

It’s Spring! Spring fever has arrived with a vengeance in my home this past week. I decided that my broke down kitchen was not going to get remodeled anytime soon. Watching HGTV, it looks so easy to 24 Hour Divine Design on a Dime, just put my head down and Fix this Old House. After all, I’m handy, crafty, pretty good with a paint brush, and definitely NOT afraid of hard work!

During this much longer process than we imagined, hat will not most likely end for another 2 weeks, I discovered that:

i am blessed by God
i am blessed with a BIG kitchen

My cupboards are full… and i mean FULL! MAXED OUT! There is NO ROOM for anything else! This got me to thinking as I look around at this beautifully big house that we are blessed with – we are FULL. We are completely, corner-to-corner, edge-to-edge full. We want to do big things here, but it’s too full to let anyone in and there are too many things to keep up with to have time for inviting, gathering, playing here. Our possessions own us.

Mark 10:21-22 Looking at the man, Jesus felt genuine love for him. “There is still one thing you haven’t done,” He told him. “Go and sell all your possessions and give the money to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.” At this, the man’s face fell, and he went away sad, for he had many possessions.

Is Jesus saying I should sell EVERYTHING? No. He’s saying that my possessions own me and there is no room for me to let go and do or become what He has created in me and for me. The stuff in my life takes so much time to clean, organize, constantly becoming something more than what it was ever supposed to be. There is no room in life to praise God for His wonderful blessings because we are constantly overwhelmed taking care of things that He has blessed us so that we could be blessing others. How can we make room to give praise and thanksgiving?

So it is purge time (or as the Flylady would say, “Time to FLING IT!”)! Today i pray for OPEN HANDS to give and to bless others. i pray that we might have open hands, giving hearts, praise on our lips, abundance in our life! i pray that we would take these things that hinder our praise and give them freely away, knowing that the life that Jesus has promised is so much more abundant than things could ever be to us. i pray that we would praise God for every blessing – big or small – and remember that each moment with friends, family, loved ones everywhere is a blessing that cannot be replaced with a thing. Today i prayed that we would open our hands and give up everything to follow Him.

Today i prayed for YOU to be BLESSED!

I’ve forgotten
Just how sweet Your mercies are Lord
Could You remind me
You’ve been faithful in my weakness
Father Your Love Overwhelms my soul
I’m learning to need You

I cry out Your name
I am in need of Your mercies, Jesus
Despite my pride and my shame
I’m learning to need You

Learning to Need You, by Justin McRoberts

How much does this ring true. Another year has come and gone. Mistakes made. Grace received. Blessings given. I could listen to this song a hundred times and think of more and more mercies that the Lord has given so graciously to me. So many times i have forgotten completely how much i need desperately His mercy, His faithfulness, His strength, His grace. So much pride, so many mistakes, so many times falling, so much…

God is so faithful, so gracious, so generous. So many times we do forget and get caught up in the crazy of this world. Every single one of us needs Him whether we realize it or not. As we enter another year, another year of loss & gain, heartache & joy, catastrophe & ecstasy, may we remember that this world is not the end. May we remember that there are many still who do not know the everlasting hope of Jesus. May we remember to give grace when we are wounded, to give comfort when we see pain, to have patience at the end of our day, to give love when we are completely empty, to surrender our exhaustion to God and see what He can make of the meager scraps we have left to give, to smile and acknowledge people throughout the day. The smallest glimpse of God in these moments may make the difference in one person’s heart. God blesses you each moment of every day that you surrender to Him. Each time we are kind to another, each time that we pray for another, each time that we give grace or mercy to another, we have opportunity to experience God’s blessing.

Today i pray that we would allow Him the opportunity to bless us in our strength and in our weakness. i pray that we would relinquish our “right” for His love, our “justified” for His grace, our “attitude” for His mercy. i pray that we would have opportunities throughout the day to help someone else, to partner with God as He works in this world. Today i pray that God’s love would overwhelm our souls and that we would learn each day to need Him more and more and that we would remember just how sweet Your mercies are Lord…

Have a listen while you pray and remember how much you need Him…

the darkness of this world increases with the tide. a little girl violently raped, marriages crumbling, fathers desperately looking for work to support their family, a sweet neighbor with brain cancer, little children mourning the loss of their mother, pornography infiltrating children’s lives. these are a few of the items on my prayer plate this week. the world seems very dark when things like these are the prominent thoughts. God is faithful to heal, to restore, to redeem, to comfort, and we must remember to look at the treasures, the redemption, the restoration that is happening every day around the world.

so today i prayed for Your light to shine on the darkness, Your glory to shine in the lives of Your sons and daughters, Your love to radiate beyond worldly circumstances. i pray that You, our Lord and our God, will intervene abundantly in each situation, that You will show grace, mercy, kindness, goodness, peace in each life, to Your children whom You love.

today i pray…
